An Ode to Woman:

Day and Night being powerful and strong

Expanding the world, never wrong

Cooking dinner and helping the family

Gving direction for the younger to see

My mother, my granny, my aunt, my sister

When I grow up, I want to be just like her

In my eyes you are what I strive to be

Working my best to be the woman like Terry

Terry is my mom and to me she is the greatest

Knowing that all women are truly blessed!

Movie and Book Comparison:

I watched the movie The Color Purple before I actually read the book so I was completely shocked when I read the book. The book and the movie are sort of similar, but not entirely. The movie leaves out a lot of the extensive details that the book tells about Celie’s life. When going back and forth between the book and the movie, I believe these details were left out because they weren’t completely important enough to have acted out in a scene. The movie flowed without having every single detail that the book had. Also I noticed that the book had things timed out differently. There were scenes later in the book that came early in the movie, and vice versa.

One of the similarities I noticed was how Celie’s dad opened both the book and the movie the same way, by saying “You better not tell nobody but God or i’ll kill you mammy” when he’s molesting her. Also the book is basically letters to God written by Celie. I believe the reason they didnt incorporate this in the movie is because they didn’t want to make a movie just of Celie writing letters to God and Nette.

I really like how the movie used a lot of the songs sung by Shug to tell a lot of the feelings and emotions that we’re being told in the movie. It helped to tie together the character of Shug and also help the public understand more and relate more to the characters because you are tapping into their feelings emotionally.

Final Project:

I’m not completely sure what I would like to do for my final project but I have a few Ideas. Throughout our time in class, Marlen used videos to tie together and explain to us what he was trying to teach. This helped me learn more because I was able to see it for myself. I’m thinking about showing a short video and then creating a fun game. The game will be played between different groups in the class.

Each group will have a different archetypical character, a different journey, and different obstacles that the character must overcome. The obstacles would be on the back of cards that the group members randomly select. I want to make sure that I tie together everything that was taught to us, but I also want to be sure that I don’t bore my classmates. I really like how Marlen did the tarot card readings. This is where I got my idea to make a board game for the class from.

I will also give a brief explanation of everything that we learned, and type up a short summary paper to hand out to each of my classmates. This will explain the details of the game, why I decided to create the game and summarize all the information we were giving throughout the semester.

Crossing the Threshold:

 Fight

With you

I will be strong

Determined to win

Crossing the threshold

Blog#19 Wednesday, Nov 11 2009

A time that I can talk about when I crossed a threshold was in high school. I tried so hard to make the school Cheerleading team. I practiced after school none stop. I gave so much dedication and hard work into making the team that nothing else at that moment mattered. My friends and I were so excited that we would be on the team together. Try-outs came and I gave my all in everything that was asked of me. I went home and felt that there was no way I wouldn’t make the team.

The next day I woke up excited to go to school and see the posting of the list of those who would be the new members of the squad. My friends and I met up at my locker, and walked to the list together. I scrolled down the list looking for my name as my friends all began jumping up and down because they made the team. I didn’t make it; my name wasn’t on the list. I was devastated. Not only because I didn’t make the team, but because all of my friends would be on the team together except me.

I crossed the threshold because I took my failure as a way to motivate myself to do harder and work harder for the next tryouts. I used my sadness and my let down as a way to push myself to work on my weaker areas. Not only did I progress and get better with cheerleading and made the team, but I also matured because I realized that instead of crying and being upset about a situation, the better thing for me to do is use that as motivation to try harder and prevent it from happening again.

Crossing the threshold, the last fight is clearly pointed out in the Lion King, the final fight between Simba and Scar.

Rescue From Without

Help

Going home

Rescue from Without

Pushing over the struggle

Home

Rescue from Without:

The rescue without is defined at when the  hero may need guides and assistants to set out on the quest, oftentimes he or she must have powerful guides and rescuers to bring them back to everyday life, especially if the person has been wounded or weakened by the experience. Usually the help the hero receives is from supernatural aid.

I’m not completely sure how I can tie a rescue without situation into something that I experienced in my own life. The idea seems a bit cartoonish and not something that happens in the real world. I can think of Milan, when she uses her familiar Mushu to help her. The plot of the story is that Mulan disguises herself as a male solider. She does this to take the place of her old, ailing father. During this time, women were unable to fight in the war.  Throughout the time disguised as a male solider, she had to endure challenging physical and mental obstacles. None of the other soldiers were aware that Mulan was a female, except her familiar Mushu, who was a Chinese Dragon.

Something I can share that is sort of similar is the relationship I have with my dog. I received my dog a few years back and got him when he was a puppy so he is very attached to me. He senses when I’m upset or having a bad day. He climbs on top of me and starts to lick my face when I cry, even thought I hate it, it makes me laugh every times and helps me overcome what was making me upset at that time.

The Monomyth: Magic Flight

Going home is the next stop

Throwing away all the old habits

Sewing a new pattern in the cloth of my life

Mowing the lawn in hopes of creating a clean walkway

Friend with me, I’m going back home

Send away all the stress and trouble

Mend the broken heart and stress I had

Commend myself for being brave throughout the return

The Magic Flight:

The magic flight is typically when the hero makes the decision to return home. When the hero returns home, he comes with another person. This person was ideal in helping them make the decision to return home, also in the journey the hero had just taken.  A time when I had taken the magic flight was when I returned home for the first time after being away at college. Now, this may not actually be what the magic flight is, but to me it makes fits. But when returning home I brought with me one of the friends I made from Pittsburgh.

During the time I spent away from home, she was the one person who comforted me when I felt homesick. She was there to make my college experiences better. She helped me through my journey of being a college freshman, away from home. She never been to Philadelphia before and I felt since she was being a big part of my college experience, I should bring her with me to experience yet another journey together. It states that an example is in the Lord of the Rings, when Frodo and Sam are rescued from the slopes of Mount Doom by the giant eagles.
