This blog I’m choosing to explain my class presentation project. I decided to create a game board. My favorite childhood game is Candy Land, so I tried to recreate the layout of the board with the famous colorful bricks. So the concept of my game is to have a stack of cards. In the stack of cards are different archetypes, different questions pertaining to the different novels and movies we watched in class. The concept of the game is for each player to pick a card. They will either have to answer the question on the card, or be the archetype and act of the monomyth the archetype endures on the card.

The game is simple, easy to play and a lot of fun. I also wanted my game to look home made. I put a lot of time in making the pieces for the board and hand writing every question of the cards. I wanted to be sure that I showed that I learned a lot in the class and that I enjoyed learning, just as the players will learn and have fun while playing my game.

SEX

S is for special, sensual, and seductive sex
E is for exploding the minds of others
X is for XXX for some, love making for others

In class were currently watching the movie Henry & June. Now at first I thought the movie would be a old fashioned, Hollywood styled movie. I didn’t not expect the movie to be so obscene and completely sexual. It caught me off guard to watch such a highly sexual movie at 8 in the morning.  I wasn’t expecting this to be an in class movie because the other movies I’m used to watching in classes are a lot more boring. But I quickly understood what was being portrayed in the movie, and realized that at a college sophomore movies like this one will be shown a lot more.

The movie is so highly sexual because she’s trying to find the things in life that make her happy, and during this quest her sexual escapades are a part of what makes her happy. She’s unhappy with her current sexual situation with her husband (or boyfriend, I’m not completely sure) so she tries new things and experiments with others. I’m really enjoying the movie and I’m excited to finish it.

Christmas Break

Break can’t come fast enough

This semester was very tough

Christmas gifts and snow with friends

I hope Christmas break never ends

Awaiting the arrival of Old Saint Nick

Hoping this Winter I don’t get sick

Missing my family and my loved ones at home

Now I’m going to end this poem!!

Thanksgiving Day!!

Turkey Day I can’t wait

Running to the table, can’t be late

I can’t wait to eat some gravy

So delicious and savory

Momma has no idea how long I had to wait

Till I can sit here and stare at my empty plate

I chose to write about how I think this class will benefit me in the future. During the past few months, I have learned a lot of valuable information, learned a lot of how I can better handle obstacles I endure in life and also it has prepared me a great amount for future English classes.  I remember this one moment in class when one of our classmates told us how she overcame cancer. At this point, I felt that I should mature and grow more as a woman. I felt that I needed to be stronger and better handle the situations I come by because they all seem so minimal compared to what others have to go through.

When registering for my classes for spring semester, the first class I asked my advisor about what Marlen’s final course he would be teaching here at IUP.  The reason I wanted to be in his class again was because I learned a hell of a lot of information but also enjoyed my time as well. This class allowed me to work hard for my grade but also helped me open my eyes to different things in life.

Color Purple

Color Purple

Determining one’s own destiny

Color Purple

Speaking from the voice within

Living with the strength others may not see

You are in control of what you want the outcome to be

In this blog I want to discuss how reading Middlesex and having our discussions about feminism in class can result in some of the gender roles and stereotypes that society has. In today’s society, one in generally classified either Man or Woman. In Middlesex, we were introduced to Cal, who faced many challenges due to inbreeding and finding his/her’s place in America. Due to the change in society, the roles are women and men have changed. Woman were usually the ones staying at home, taking care of home duties, children, cleaning, cooking and daily tasks that men were unable to complete while they are out working. In today’s society however, more woman are taking the responsibilities of being the sole financial providers for their families. Also, jobs that are considered “male” jobs, which are physically demanding, such as police officers and corporate leaders, are becoming “female” jobs as well.

In my opinion, we have come too far as a society to worry about gender roles and sexually. There was a time when race was a factor, and at times it still is. Now we have to deal with bashing those who have a different gender preference then what is considered to be the “norm”. Society places too much emphasis on negativity instead of on the positive outcome that comes from those who are just simply different. For example, talk show host Ellen has done numerous good deeds for those less fortunate. She has helped to push for change with our new President Obama, she has not done any negativity at all. But when googled, the first topic few sentences that are told about her is that she’s gay.  Just because someone is different does not make them a bad person. This does not foreshadow any of the wrong that criminals, murders, molesters or any others who have done.

A poem that I found that relates to this topic is called Understanding:

How often do we compromise equality-
To accommodate our hate?

We force our unhappiness into the lives of others
In an attempt to renew our own joy

Why do we try to define and assign love?
Love is a uncontainable, uncontrollable force
Where is the logic in attempting to tame-
That which has no limitations?

Life will go on,
Even as we die
So why do we deprive other of life,
Because we neglected to live our own?

How often we forget how much greater
The world is compared to the human race?
And so we abuse it,
Yet we are shocked,
When the world
Retaliate

We are as children who have not yet
Learned to play with one another
Refusing to understand, learn, or experience
The life of another

Unwilling to venture outside of our own
Beliefs
Culture
And community

We cannot begin to understand the possibilities of the world
Until we are willing to understand
And appreciate
What the world is made of
