Dear Marlen,
I want to start this paper by saying how great of a professor you are, as well as a wonderful person. You are extremely educated and well aware of all aspects of literature. The interest you showed in our class and the subjects you taught us showed me how excited you have been to teach our class. A lot of other professors tend to seem like they spend the class time trying to pass time, just for a pay check. However, in your class you were very enthusiastic, extremely joyous and seemed very excited to deliver new information to us; even thought it was 8 am.
I’m not going to seem like a suck up and spend the rest of these 2-3 pages boasting about how great I feel you are, so instead I’m going to give my favorite and least favorite aspects of the course. As well as expressing how I feel this class will benefit me in the future. To be honest, there’s not really much that I can stay that will be different from my last letter because my opinion on the class has not changed. I still enjoyed my time in class and now that the class is over, I’m starting to regret not registering for your Spring 2010 course.
My favorite aspect of the class is how you encouraged us to interact with one another. The class became a discussion class where everyone was able to express themselves and tell how each of the different subjects that we were learning related to our own lives. I’m not really a fan of classes where the teacher gives out the information, the students take down notes and then there’s a test a few days later. Your class allowed us to learn in many different ways. We were able to obtain all of the information, while reading books that were both interesting and pertained to the subjects at hand, as well as watching movies that were very enjoyable that allowed us to see first hand how the journey’s, archetypes and monomyths panned out in “real life” situations; although the depictions were the beliefs of Hollywood.
Ok, so Henry and June seemed to freak the entire class out; I believe because none of us were used to watching movies that were so extreme and hard core in any of our previous classes. I must admit, I was completely intrigued by the movie, I even told my friends about it and we watched it online together. There reaction when first watching it was exactly the same as mine, they were blind sighted by the heavy sexual content that were didn’t fully understand June’s journey to find her self as a woman, apart of which was sexually. Before watching The Color Purple in class, I had already watched the movie numerous times; most of which were because my mom made me watch it to “learn”. However, I never really understood and seen the journey, different archetypes and the multiple forms of symbolism in the movie. I could appreciate the movie a lot more now because I’m able to watch it on a more adult and educated level then before.
There are really no negatives about the course to me. I will be honest and say that the blogs were a complete and utter pain in the ass, because it seemed like they would never end. But they also allowed me to be proud that I did something I would never think to do and I actually enjoyed having a blog. I’m actually even thinking to even start my own blog about popular entertainment stories, fashion, and daily political fixes; something I’m sure my peers would enjoy reading.
What I feel I will be able to take from this course in my future, aside from the educational aspect, is a better understanding of how to handle situations better. I was completely impressed by how you handled the situation with having to meet with your boss because of the Rate My Professor incident. It showed me that in times when I will be backed into a corner and placed in situations where I need to present myself professionally, I should be well prepared and have all aspects of the situation covered. I find it ironic that the class in which we learn about overcoming obstacles and crossing thresholds we were able to see your own journey play itself out first hand. I really enjoyed this class and I’m still waiting for someone to drop out of your Spring 2010 courses so I can sign up!
Sincerely,
Tanshanique Binion
